On-the-Go Meal Ideas Plus Meal Storage Options
Creating meals that can be packed and eaten on-the-go has been essential to our family over the years. Until recently, my husband worked full-time for UPS. This meant he was on the go, driving a package truck and needed meals that could be eaten quickly with less mess. This type of meal would also work for anyone who has a career that is fast paced or where a microwave may not be available. With school starting again, you may find you have a need for meals that travel well. Some of these ideas may require preparation the day before, but they will save you some time when you are rushing out the door in the morning! I'm also sharing a few on-the-go container ideas that are perfect for packed lunches.
Breakfast Burritos

Breakfast burritos are a great way to have a breakfast packed and ready to eat. We loved mixing scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes, cheese and salsa together and wrapping them in a flour tortilla. Once you have the filling, you can make enough burritos for the entire week. This was perfect for my husband and provided a filling meal to fuel his day. Add as many or as few ingredients as you want in these hearty burritos! We wrap our breakfast burritos in aluminum foil for storage. Here's a great recipe for breakfast burritos!
Breakfast Muffins

Another great way to make a breakfast on the go that isn't too messy is to make breakfast muffins. This recipe put a spin on traditional blueberry muffins and added bacon! These are great for kids to eat in the car or for yourself if you're traveling to work early and do a lot of driving. Have you ever had a muffin with bacon inside?
Oatmeal Man Cookies
This idea was taken from my recipe box and written down by my husband! These cookies are made with spelt flour which is a high fiber and high protein wheat flour. I'm not sure why he considers them to be "man cookies", but I think you'll find they stick with you for a while! (I'm chuckling while holding this recipe card).
Oatmeal Man Cookies
  • 2 cups of spelt flour
  • 1 cup of rolled oats
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 sticks of butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 8 oz. semi-sweet chocolate
  • Flaked salt for garnish
  • 3/4 cup of chopped nuts
Combine the wet ingredients into the dry and mix well with a spoon until combined. Scoop into cookie sized balls and bake at 350 degrees for 12-13 minutes. Immediately spread flaked salt on top then set aside to let cool.
Overnight Oats

Another great on-the-go breakfast is overnight oatmeal. I love this idea because you can throw the ingredients together quickly and they are also ingredients that are commonly stocked in the pantry. Overnight oats require no cooking or baking! This recipe uses oats, milk, yogurt, chia seeds and maple syrup. I love the many ideas Lisa Byran shares in her post, Easy Overnight Oats, for different toppings to spice things up throughout the week.
Versatile Packed Lunches

If you have kids chances are you already pack lunches that are healthy and nutritious. Consider packing the same thing for your spouse or yourself, but in a more grown up version! We've written on this topic before a couple years ago and you can click to see what Maureen shared here. Here are three BPA free lunch containers I'd also recommend for a meal on-the-go:
  1. Shopwithgreen 52 Oz To Go Salad Container - I love this one because it has storage on the bottom for a salad and keeps the toppings separate. It even comes with a 2 oz dressing container.
  2. BentoBox For Adults - For my husband, he needed several meals to last the day so having storage that would fit in his cooler that could be stacked was important. I love how these stack together and are leak proof and microwave safe.
  3. Freshware Meal Prep Containers - These containers are perfect for meal preppers! They come in a box of 50. They are great because they are stackable, leak proof, BPA free, freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe.
I hope these ideas inspire you to feel prepared for a busy week ahead if you find you are also on-the-go! These recipes are also great ways to maintain a healthy diet and hopefully help to avoid spontaneous trips to the fast food restaurants. If you have any amazing on-the-go meal ideas that work for you we'd love to hear from you! Tag us at #takethemameal with your next on-the-go meal idea this week.
