Baking Grandma Johnson's Scones
I often enjoy searching for new recipes to enhance our daily meal routine. One of my favorite places to look for delicious recipes is on our Take Them a Meal website. Under the heading of Recipes, our recipe developer, Maureen, has compiled an assortment of dinner and dessert ideas, including Grandma Johnson's scone recipe. Since I had never made scones before, I was excited to give this recipe a try. They came out wonderfully, and I thoroughly enjoyed them with a cup of rooibos tea. I hope this post inspires you to try the recipe for yourself!
To make Grandma Johnson's Scones you'll need:
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup add-ins of your choice - raisins, chocolate chips, pumpkin, cranberry/orange, lemon/poppyseed, etc. (I decided to use raisins and walnuts).
These scones come together quickly and are easy enough for a beginner like me to make. Here are the directions to make them for yourself or a friend:
  • In a small bowl, blend the sour cream and baking soda, and set aside.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt.
  • Cut in the butter.
  • Stir the sour cream mixture and egg into the flour mixture until just moistened; do not overmix.
  • Stir in add-ins of your choice.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead briefly.
  • Roll or pat dough into a 3/4-inch thick round.
  • Cut into 12 wedges, and place them 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake for 12 to 15 minutes in the preheated oven, until golden brown on the bottom.
If you would like to prepare this recipe in advance to use at a different time, take the 12 pre-baked wedges, place them on a sheet pan, and freeze. Once frozen, store them in an airtight ziplock bag until ready to bake. You can even bake them without thawing. The next time you aren't sure what to take, consider taking Grandma Johnson's scones as a sweet breakfast treat.
