Candace Nelson!!! Our Celebrity Meal Provider for October
I'm guessing many of you already know our celebrity meal provider for October! Candace Nelson is a judge on the Food Network's Cupcake Wars as well as Sugar Rush (in addition to being an executive producer). While her list of accomplishments is long, we love her because in 2005 she brought cupcakes to the forefront when she opened the world's first ever cupcake bakery, Sprinkles Cupcakes, in Beverly Hills. She sold over 2,000 cupcakes the first week and now there are 22 stores across the United States.
What I personally appreciate about Candace is that she is an entrepreneur who openly shares about her journey and invests in other women entrepreneurs to help them accomplish their dreams. She really encompasses the spirit of Take Them A Meal in how she wants to help others by using skills from her own life.
In November, Candace will be releasing her new book, Sweet Success. She shares the story of how she built Sprinkles for the purpose of inspiring others. Reese Witherspoon described Candace's new book as "a crash course in innovation, creativity, and hard work!"
It's not really a surprise that instead of a meal, Candace takes muffins to her friends. She knows what she does well and that's how she cares for her loved ones! Find out more about her special recipe below:

1. What is your go-to recipe when taking a meal to a friend?
Hemp Hearts Banana Muffins (makes 1 dozen)
  • 1 2/3 cups all purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons hemp hearts, plus 1/4 cup for sprinkling
  • 4 teaspoons ground flax meal
  • 2 teaspoons white or black chia seeds
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2/3 cup mashed very ripe bananas (2 medium)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup coconut sugar (or dark brown sugar)
  • 2/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
Preheat the oven to 350F. Line a 12-compartment muffin tin with cupcake liners and set aside. In a large bowl, sift the flour, hemp, flax, chia, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the bananas, sugar, coconut sugar, oil, and eggs. Add the dry ingredients in two additions to the wet mixture, mixing until just incorporated after each addition. Divide the batter among the prepared muffin tins and sprinkle each muffin with 1 teaspoon of hemp seeds. Bake until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 19-21 minutes. Cool completely.
2. What container do you use to take your muffins?
I like using a kraft colored bakery box and tying it closed with red & white baker's twine.
3. What inspires you to take meals to others and how does that align with your work?
Food is love and healing. I've devoted my life to working with food - first with Sprinkles and now Pizzana. I'm particularly drawn to simple foods that delight and connect people-both to a nostalgic past and to one another.
We hope you enjoyed spending a little time with Candace! Don't forget her book, Sweet Success, comes out in November. It's a thoughtful gift for the Sprinkles fan, dreamer, or business owner in your life. If you preorder here you will get free access to Candace's pie course and cookie ebook just in time for holiday baking!
