Heartfelt & Inspiring Resolutions for Grief JANUARY 14, 2025 / KELLI NAPOTNIK / Every January, we look at the year ahead, often anticipating opportunities to embark on new and exciting beginnings as well as resolve prior conflicts. Because of the loss of a loved one or an unexpected hardship, however, there are times when it can be difficult to feel hopeful. If you are feeling this way or know someone who is, here are some uplifting suggestions that I hope will support you in the new year.
Resolution #1 - Acknowledge Your Grief
One thing I've learned through facing hardship is acknowledging that what I'm going through is difficult. Doing so can provide great relief and free you from the unnecessary burden of trying to be strong when you aren't. We've often written about how grief has no timeline and this is still very true. One of the most important resolutions you can make this year is to acknowledge your pain while granting yourself grace on any timeline. If you are finding it difficult to move past your grief, it may be beneficial to seek the assistance of a pastor or a professional counselor.
Resolution #2 - Tell A friend
Sharing your feelings with a trusted friend or loved one can be a helpful step in experiencing greater healing. There is something freeing about one's voice being heard when sharing vulnerable places of the soul. Journaling is another way to share your feelings. When words fail to express themselves, sometimes writing is the best outlet for organizing and processing our thoughts.
Resolution #3 - Start a New Hobby
In my personal experience with grief, I have discovered that having a hobby is very therapeutic. I have found that watercolor painting, embroidering, gardening, or even baking sourdough has allowed me to be present in the moment, and take my mind off of the worries of the day. Perhaps choosing a hobby to do with a loved one or a close friend can provide an opportunity to talk through the range of emotions you are experiencing.
Resolution #4 - Don't Hesitate to Ask For Help
We often underestimate our loved one's willingness to help. More often than not, friends or family members would love to reach out and offer help but are not sure how to ask. Make it a resolution to be specific in how you ask for help, such as asking for a meal schedule or having a loved one pick up groceries for you. If you are a caregiver, ask someone to fill in for you so that you may enjoy a much-needed break. You may be surprised at the joy you provide others when reaching out for assistance with these or other specific needs that arise.
