Our 6 Favorite Meal Taking Containers

More often than not, I select what meal I am going to take to someone based on what containers I have on hand. I'm more likely to have a low stress meal taking experience if containers are one less consideration as I'm making my preparations. In the past, I didn't think about my containers ahead of time, and I often found myself in a container pinch when it came time to deliver my meal.
Now, I always keep the following items on hand:
-
Gladware - There are several brands of this type of container and I'm referring to the plastic containers that come in various sizes with colored lids. These containers are great for taking cold items like chopped fruit, applesauce, muffins, cookies, etc. Gladware also offers 8x8 and 9x12 disposable ovenware that even comes with a lid. These are great for casseroles, lasagna, baked desserts, etc. Click here to view Gladware containers.
-
Ziploc bags - If I can put a meal item in a Ziploc bag, I usually do. The bags are less expensive than containers and work for many items. I use them for taking fresh bread, rolls, and green salads. If you keep bags of several sizes on hand, it's a great way to keep salad toppings sorted. I put the lettuce/spinach in a large Ziploc bag and I put the toppings in smaller bags. Then, I put all the smaller bags in the larger bag. This way, everyone can customize their own salad.
-
Foil 9x13 pans - I buy these in bulk at Costco, but you can get them at many locations. Heavy duty foil on the top can be labeled easily with a permanent marker. Not only are these pans great for casseroles, but anything else that needs to be baked. You can also transfer crock pot recipes to foil pans when you're ready to deliver. Eco-foil pans are another good option as they are made of 100% recycled aluminum.
-
Mason jars - This is a great way to transport soup. It prevents spills and the glass helps to keep the soup warm. Smaller mason jars are also good for salad dressings.
-
Washed out yogurt and sour cream containers with lids - These are my favorite containers to use because they're free and I'm able to give something I would typically throw out a second use. The larger containers are great for cold salads (pasta salad, potato salad, etc.) and the smaller ones can work well for all sorts of toppings or extras that you might want to send along with your meal. I label the lid with a permanent marker so the recipient doesn't expect sour cream when there is really chocolate pudding inside.
-
Decorative paper plates/napkins for dessert - When it comes to taking meals, attention to a small detail can make a big impression. I'll often put cookies on a decorative paper plate and slip them into a large Ziploc bag. Foil and plastic wrap never stick to paper plates for me, so this has been a great solution for keeping dessert items fresh. I'll also tuck in decorative napkins to brighten the table.
