Taking Freezer Meals Before a Friend's Surgery OCTOBER 13, 2020 / ADINA BAILEY / Someone near and dear to me is preparing for a fairly significant surgery, and I've been thinking about ways to help. I know from my own experience that it's often the time leading up to a procedure that can be the hardest mentally. Not only are you a little nervous, but you want to make sure you have what you need at home for your recovery.
With that in mind, I decided to help my loved one during this time by preparing some freezer meals in advance. That way she will know her freezer is stocked before heading into surgery. If nothing else, it will provide some peace of mind in the days before heading to the hospital.
This past week, I prepared two pans of Cheesy Chicken and Black Bean Enchiladas from our site's selection of tested and yummy Freezer Meal Recipes. Those adorable black and white foil pans (with lids!) were at Dollar Tree in packs of two. I bought a small container of sour cream for her fridge as well. I'm also planning to take some quarts of soup, bread, and pumpkin muffins for her freezer.
Breakfast is also a nice meal to have easily available in the freezer after surgery. A caregiver can prepare it for the patient or children who live at home can have it for an easy meal. Two excellent breakfast freezer meal recipes are these Whole Wheat Pumpkin Pancakes or this Baked Brownie Oatmeal.
This past summer, I sent a friend a "Pre-Surgery" care package. I wasn't able to cook for her since she lives a few hours away, but I wanted her to know that I was thinking of her. I included items like pajamas that would work well for the hospital, a packet of flower seeds to plant in advance, my copy of a novel I hoped she would like, lip balm, and a lotion to help with scars as they heal. Oh, and chocolate, of course!
A meal schedule for a friend having surgery is a wonderful gift, but taking freezer meals in advance and sending a care package are also great ways to let your friend know how much you care!
