One of the changes we experience during the fall is daylight savings time. As with any change, turning our clocks back one hour brings both joys and challenges! While I can relate to the blessing of getting an extra hour of sleep, I can also identify with the struggle of creating different activities for my children to help pass the time before bed. Over the past several months, we have been accustomed to going outside after dinner. Now that the days are shorter, we find ourselves indoors more. How can you help a family with children embrace the time change? Here are fun and creative ways to help pass the time before bed!
Still Get Outside!
Instead of staying indoors, embrace the cooler darker evenings by bundling up and enjoy all that fall nights have to offer! Walk your neighborhood with headlamps or flashlights. Hang outdoor lights to help light up your backyard or enjoy sitting around a campfire!
Make use of glow-in-the-dark gear/toys
Getting outside in the dark is fun, but you'll also want to remember simple safety precautions! Wear reflective clothing so each family member is more visible. My family enjoys evening bike rides after dinner, so we attached these lights to our bikes. By doing so, I can spot my kids easily from my front porch as I watch them bike down our road. Whether they are coming or going, there's a flashing light on both ends of their bikes making them extra visible!
If you're taking a meal to a family with children, consider sending along glow sticks for the kids to enjoy (or wear!) to make outdoor play fun in the dark. It's also a wonderful activity they can play indoors! This cute party stick set would be an inexpensive addition to an activity basket for any family with children. When my kids were younger, this activity kept them busy for hours. After they had fallen asleep, I would sneak into their rooms and remove the dimming glowstick! This large kit allows them to play for several evenings!
Other great glow-in-the-dark activities include:
Make it an Opportunity to Listen!
With a change in seasons comes a change in the sounds of nature around us. Enjoy the darkening hours by getting outside as a family and listening to the new sounds of fall and winter. Have your kids journal their observations or draw pictures of what they think they hear! I remember an evening when my children and I heard an unfamiliar whimpering cry from something outside. My kids were worried it was something scary! We researched nocturnal bird calls and discovered the sound we heard was a screech owl! Once my kids saw the cute owl, they were no longer afraid when they heard it. If you're wondering what you could take to a family with young kids along with your meal, consider this adorable nature journal. They can color the insects or creatures they discover from the listening activity I mentioned above!
With the seasonal time change comes a shift in our activities. This beautiful time of year doesn't have to be hard, especially if you're a parent of young children like me. Embrace the time when the sun goes down to journal, play games, or get creative with fun outdoor activities as a family. Do you have any ideas you'd like to share to help families with kids embrace the time change? We'd love to hear!
